Prevention is better than cure

8:38 AM | Publish by Apurva

Well someone has rightly said - “Prevention is better than cure”. This is one lesson that I will never forget specially if it is anything related to my body.

I would Iike to share a small incident that took place with me which left a huge impact on me and taught a lesson of a life. I am sure that it will impact your thinking also.

From my child hood I have always being running away from the dentists. Like people have darkness phobia, water phobia I have this Dentist phobia. How much ever pain I use to have in my teeth, I never use to tell my parents about it fearing that they would take me to a dentist.

Some 5-6 years back, while brushing I started seeing some blood coming from my gums. But again as I said since I had this dentist phobia I ignored this sign and didn’t tell anybody about this. Two three months passed by and then I realized that the gum above one of my teeth has this swelling or a mole kind of formation which was white in color. Now I was a bit worried. I realized that the bleeding sign which I had been ignoring for so long has turned into something serious.

As 2-3 days passed on again, the tooth had now started paining. It was high time now. With fear within me, I told my dad about it and got a good scolding from him for not telling this before. Next day they took me to a dentist where he took an X-ray. The news was not good. Tears started falling from my eyes. An infection had built up in my gums which had reached the root of my teeth. And the only solution for it was to undergo a root canal. Imagine the state of my mind. A girl who had this severe phobia about even just visiting a dentist had now to undergo a root canal. It was a very big deal for me. The doctor told me that still I have got this checked at right time.  If I would have further delayed it, I could have lost my tooth or the infection would have spread to other teeth also.  When I told him that my gum was bleeding from last 2-3 months, he explained me that we should never ignore such signs. Had I showed it to him at that time, the infection could have been prevented.

Somehow I gained some courage and undergone this root canal and got that infection healed. But it was really an eye opener for me. I will never ever ignore any warning sign from any of my body part including my gums and teeth.

This one incident left a huge impact on my life and changed my thinking process all together. I became more careful about any warning signs given by my body and more concerned for my entire family. I don’t want anyone to repent that why didn’t they took the precaution and action on time. I now totally believe that “Prevention is better than Cure”.
