It was a day of our first road trip after marriage. We both were very excited about it because it was the first time that we were going for a long vacation all our own away from the family and relatives. Since our marriage we both were all surrounded either by family members or by some relatives and could get to spend some quality time with each other.
Ours is an arranged marriage and before marriage, we could hardly meet each other due to the orthodox nature of our families. So we could get a very little time to understand each other's choices, likes and dislikes.
Thanks to that long weekend that my dear hubby thought of planning a road trip for 3-4 days. So we decided to Mahableshwar and nearby places as I always wanted to go some hill station.
We packed our bags and all other important things required for the trip. But one thing we forgot was to ask each other the choice of music so that we could make the collection based on each others liking.
On our drive initially we were talking to each other, telling each other our college stories and so on. But after some time we were like out of topics on which we could talk and there was a complete silence in the car. Then suddenly I asked my husband that, shall we listen to some music and of course he said yes. As far I could understand him till now he was very choosy about things so I was afraid whether we would like the music collection that I have with me.
So very carefully I played the best song that I had in my collection. I enjoyed the song very much and waited for my husband's reaction. I waited for some time, but there was no reaction. I thought at least he should say something or at least praise that I have played such a nice song. But no.. there was no reaction. So to get some reaction from him I told him that this is my favorite song. He just said "nice", and I was like... what.. just nice..!!
After half the song, he asked me if can change the music. I just thought maybe he must have not liked this song. So I played the next song which was on the top chart-buster of the year. From his face I could see that he didn't like this either. I had all the top songs from last 3 years and kept on shuffling from the playlist hoping he would like at least one. But no... he didn't enjoyed any of those.
After all my try.. I simply asked him what kind of music did he like. To which he said he generally listens to only English music and jazz is his favorite. And he doesn't enjoy the Hindi film songs much. I was like completely surprised. I just thought.. Oh no our music choices are totally opposite.. I love Bollywood songs which he doesn't and he likes jazz which I hate..!!
Politely i asked him whether he would like to play his music collection to which he said yes.. only if I don't mind. I just thought .. do I have any choice...!!
After listening to his jazz my head started aching but could not say anything to him.
After our first road trip we both understood that we cannot get along each other's choice of music and have to find some way out. So from the next trip onwards we decided that we will make a playlist with alternate music of each other's choice.
This idea worked very well and now after 5 years we have started to understand and like each other's choice of music. I guess this is what marriage means... understanding each other choice and respect it.
