Impact of movie and music piracy

9:50 AM | Publish by Apurva

Piracy is an act of robbery or criminal violence. Piracy can be in any field, whether music, television, movies, writing and even the corporate world. Of late we have been hearing a lot about music and movie piracy. There have been lot of campaigns running to make people aware of piracy and asking them not to be involved in such acts.

Actually, the common man, who becomes the part of the piracy is not even aware that he is doing something wrong. Piracy is a criminal act and can lead to judicial punishment. But people do not realize that they doing this criminal act.

In the earlier days, the act of music and movie piracy was very less. But with the introduction of technology it has increased like anything. We could see so many music albums and the movies available on the web for download just after their release. The people who are making them available are doing it without the consent of the concerned people. It is as good as stealing their product and selling it.

The impact of such piracy act on the music and movie industry is very adverse. Let us look at some of these negative impacts.

  1. Since the music albums are available free of cost on the web for download, there are very few people who actually purchase these albums online or in the physical copy. So if there are very few buyers, the revenue that the music company use to earn earlier has reduced drastically. The quality of the music downloaded from the web may not be the same as that of original music, but still people prefer to download it free of cost then to spend some penny.
  2.  Not only on the web, the music piracy is also done in the form of selling duplicate music albums DVD/CDs on streets. These DVDs/CDs are very cheap as compared to the original ones and hence people prefer to buy them. This again impacts the sell of the original DVD/CDs and the company has to incur huge losses.
  3.  Not only in the music industry, but the piracy is largely practiced in the film industry also. The day the movie is released, within hours it is available on the internet for download or watching online. The impact is that the number of people actually going to movie theater and watching movie reduces as they prefer to watch it online free of cost. This again impacts the revenue for the movie makers and distributors.
  4.  There are lot of pirated movie DVDs available the same day not only in India but all over the world. Hence the overseas revenue is also impacted.
  5.  The piracy not only impacts the music and film industry but also the common man. Now when the film makers and the distributors know that they have to incur the losses due to the piracy, what they do is increase the cost of the movie ticket. The tickets which were available at very low cost earlier and now become costly like anything. The bigger the budget of the movie is the costly the ticket becomes.
We all participate in this piracy act by watching the movies and music online and buying pirated DVD/CDs. But we do not realize that by some or the other means it is going to hit the pockets of the common man. Hence from now onwards take care of not being the part of this piracy and discourage other people also.
