Music Festivals in India

4:05 AM | Publish by Apurva

Music Festivals are gaining lot of popularity in India from last 4-5 years. We can see lot of younger lot coming up with their own bands and music. Music festivals give such musicians to showcase their talent and gain popularity.

If we look at the some of the popular music fests in India, some of the names that come to my mind are:

  •  NH7 Weekender, a multicity event held in Pune, Kolkatta, Delhi and Bangalore. Its main motto is to bring the different genre of music lovers together and enjoy it together. It generally showcases non-bollywood kind of music.
  • Bangalore Open Air, which is said to be 100% metal. It showcases only metal bands.
  • Mood Indigo, held by IIT Mumbai. It is one of the oldest music festival in India. It is part of the annual cultural fest of IIT Mumbai and held every year for 4 days in the month of December
  • Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav held in Pune. This festival is different from the ones listed above. It is an Indian Classical musical festival, and is one of the most popular festival of Indian Classical Music around the world. It was initiated by Pt. Bhimsen Joshi in the year 1953.
  • Sunburn held in Goa. Sunburn is also one of the most popular festivals around the world and we can see the audience from all over during this fest. It is held every year in Goa on the Candolim Beach, Goa. I think it is more like a party, as people drink, dance, shop, enjoy food during the festival.
  • Hornbill International Festival held in Nagaland. This one is from our North eastern part of our country and is one of its kind. It was named after the bird Indian Hornbill. The festival showcases the culture and music from of the north eastern states. Of late in the view of the youth the Hornbill Rock contest has also been started by the organizers.
  • Ragasthan, held in the sand dunes of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. This is again a treat for the cultural music lovers. People not only enjoy the music here, but get to experience the hospitality of Rajasthan, enjoy the authentic food and adore their art. It also has tourists from all over the world as its lover.

Apart from the one listed above, there are many other music festivals held in the different parts of the country. As a music lover, I have been very fortunate to attend few of these festivals. Last year I attended the NH7 Weekender held in Pune. The highlight of the festival was the show by Sunidhi Chavan. Oh my god what a versatile singer she is. There were lot of other bands which gave some powerful performances.
The other event that I had attended last year was the Ragasthan in Jaiselmer. It was an experience of its kind. I felt like a royal queen for whom the artists performing to some of the best Rajasthani Music.

This year I am targeting the Sunburn, Goa as I am too excited with the experiences shared the people. I am sure after reading this article you too would be tempted to attend at least one of these music festivals this year…!!!
